September/October 2023 • www.awmagazine.com • 7CAround Your Town Around Your Town Dog owners in Moon Township no longer have to travel far to find a dog park. Instead, they can head to 1845 Beaver Grade Road, where the Black Dog Wine Company Dog Park at Moon Park opened in August. There, locals can turn their pups loose inside one of two fenced-in areas meant for either large or small dogs. They can also sit under one of two pavilions and talk with other dog lovers while their pets enjoy some off-leash play time. A popular amenity in many communities, Moon’s dog park had been a long time coming, says Moon Township Parks Vice Chair Don Liskay. “It’s been about 20 years since we first envisioned putting a dog park somewhere in Moon,” Liskay said while attending a ribbon cutting held to announce the opening Aug 8. “So, it took awhile, but thanks to the township supervisors and some sponsors, it happened.” At that ribbon cutting, Moon Township Parks and Recreation Community Outreach Coordinator Lauren Madison said that 16 sponsors stepped up to help bring the project to fruition. While some made financial donations, others donated benches, tables and agility equipment. The park’s two pavilions were donated by the Moon Parks Foundation. Moon Township Supervisor John Hertzer says the park’s sponsors helped cover the overwhelming majority of the costs associated with building the park while Moon Township employees did the work themselves. Hertzer says the park will be a valuable asset to those in the community, particularly to residents who don’t have a backyard. While many donors contributed to the project, its largest donor is Black Dog Wine Company, which secured the park’s naming rights. The winery operates out of a historic farmhouse mansion in North Fayette Township. Owner Mark Rozum says the winery is dog friendly and hosts a number of pet-friendly events throughout the year, including an annual dog costume contest that will be coming up once again in October. Rozum named his winery, which he opened in 2017, after one of his own hunting dogs. “We’re dog lovers and host a lot of pet-friendly events for people to bring their dogs and enjoy some wine while relaxing outside,” says Rozum. “The tie-in with our name only made sense and I’m glad we could do this for the Moon community.” The next largest sponsor of the park was Valerie Brett. Additional sponsors include Air Ground Xpress, Bachman Builders, Friendly Paws Pet Resort & Friendly Paws Littles, Paw and Order Dog Training, Woofles Premier Pet Resort and others. Moon’s dog park is now open Patrick Hobbs, executive vice president of Air Ground Xpress, was among those on hand at the ribbon cutting. For the event, he brought along his great Dane, Gus, who he says is a fixture at their offices at Pittsburgh International Airport/Cargo 1. A Moon resident, Hobbs says his trucking and cargo transportation company operates in seven cities and that they try to remain civically active in each. He lives in Moon, though, and realized the need for a dog park, as his wife had been going to another dog park in Sewickley. “We’re active in the communities where we’re operating and thought this was a good way to spend some money,” he said. To help financially sustain the park going forward, the Moon Township Parks and Recreation department has started a Pup Lovers Club and is giving away “wag bags” to anyone who donates $100 to join. Memberships can be purchased by clicking on the Dog Park link on the drop-down menu under “Parks” at www.moonparks.org. More information about the wag bags and the park can also be found there. The entrance to the Black Dog Wine Company Dog Park at Moon Park is located at 1845 Beaver Grade Road, across from the Downes Fire Station. Additional parking is located on Ewing Road across from the entrance to Moon Township Park. The dog park is a short distance from there. The dog park is open dawn to dusk from Wednesday through Sunday. It will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for maintenance and upkeep.
